Safety Tip
Believe it or not, at night, on the freeway,
the most dangerous lane to be driving in is the left lane.
Many times a drunk driver will enter the
freeway on the off ramp, going the wrong way. Then they go to what they think is
the far right, or slow lane, to avoid being caught by the highway patrol. But
they really end up in the fast lane going the wrong way. Many head-on collisions
happen this way each year.
Also, when driving at night, never stop to pick
up a hitchhiker, and never stop or get out of your car for someone who appears
to be having car trouble. This may sound a little mean and uncaring, but too
many good Samaritans have ended their lives by stopping to help someone at
night.
At one time, picking up a hitchhiker or
stopping to help someone with car trouble was relatively safe, and without
danger. Those times are long gone. Too often it's a set up and the dirt-bag is
just waiting for an unsuspecting, good Samaritan to pull over in the middle of
the night when there are no witnesses around.
If you make that mistake once, you may not get
a second chance.
If you see someone who needs help at night,
call 911 on your cell phone or use a payphone at the next rest stop to call for
help.
